Yet Another Burn Trauma Update With Bonus Spinal Inflammation!

My burn is still a deep purple. I got a whole other jar of the antibiotic goop, and I think I’ll keep using it for a few more days until it is completely free of rawness. Then I switch to 8 weeks (!) of Mederma to prevent scarring. A tiny tube costs nearly 20 bucks, as Danny keeps reminding me (he is the one who has been going to CVS and buying my 5 dollar 1-time use bandages and now the Mederma.) 8 weeks, geez. But I don’t want a huge-ass scar on my leg.

This bruise-burn area is much larger than the infamous bruise I recieved when I wiped out in a puddle at Walgreens and slammed my back into the shelves. We took pictures of that, too. We’re sick people.

Speaking of backs, it took two full IVs of steroids to knock out this round of crippling spinal inflamation. I am being referred to a spinal specialist because my rehumatologist has no answers other than to add Methotrexate and Folic Acid to my already huge pill regimen. Hopefully the spinal doc can prevent this from happening ever again, let alone every few weeks. I swear, I have had 6 IVs of steroids since April. That is toxic, man. No thank you.

But I am back at work today, though still taking it easy on the old spinal column. Driving is a task. But I am happy to be sleeping comfortably (last night was the first in a week!) and out of bed. Bed gets boring after a week. Even GiGi wouldn’t stay in it with me. Hmpf.

You know Meg, I think I should stop reading your blog: you make me feel guilty. I’ve been reading your posts for some time now, because yours and Danny’s posts appear in our small geek aggregated feed. And as I read about you, I realize what an idiot I am. You always seem so happy, so full of life; I read about your back pain, your burning accidents and other health related issues and it seems that in spite of those, you’re still a happy person.

I don’t mean to brag or anything, but I’m in perfect health. Sure, I have my little problems, but I’m not on any medication, I don’t have any unbearable, chronic pains, I’m not subject to heart problems (physiologically speaking at least…), high pressure, low pressure or anything, but I still manage to find reasons to be down when there are none. Don’t they say that the most important thing is to be healthy? What’s your secret, Meg? Is it the Danny luv? :-)

I hope you get better soon, take care.

    Meg..

I don’t think you will have a scar. I got a very bad burn from scalding water from my knee all the way down to my ankle. The water was so hot that it took off all my skin and only left a raw sore.

My burn got infected and was so painfull that I couldn’t walk more than a block for at least a month.

You could see the burn area for about a year or more, but no life long scar. Don’t worry, it’ll be fine.

Forgot to mention. The army medic kept my whole leg in ice water until I had no feeling from the knee down. That was the only way to kill the pain. They didn’t give me any pain killers, just put a bandage from the top of my knee all the way down to my ankle and said see a doctor on Monday, it was Saturday.

I drove home from Ellington Field to West U. with my left leg out the window. I couldn’t stand for the leg to be on the floor. Hurt like crazy, but not as much as some thing that would later come down the pike….I was 26. I know you have been through a lot more painful experiences than I have had.

Although dad says not to worry about the scar, I’ve heard that Vitamin E ointment works just as well, if not better than mederma. It’s less expensive if you want to give it a go. This is what my friend’s doctor told her to put on her son’s face where a dog bit him.
